Edsel & Eleanor Ford House

Along the shorelines of Lake St. Clair sits the beautiful estate of Edsel & Eleanor Ford. Located in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, this was the Fords’ dream home and final residence. It was here that Edsel and Eleanor raised their four children: Henry II, Benson, Josephine, and William. This location created a safe and intimate space for the family to spend time together.

The grounds of the estate are a beauty of its own. Eighty-seven acres of land were planned out strategically by the landscape designer, Jens Jensen. Utilizing sunlight, woodlands, a meadow, a lagoon, and an island, Jensen created a sanctuary for the Fords. He was able to work alongside the architect, Albert Kahn, who had designed the home and supporting structures for the estate.

This home reflects the Fords’ passion for art and quality of design, the exterior of which was largely inspired by The Cotswold Hills of England. The Fords loved the cozy feeling of the English village where stone row-houses are clustered together. The grand interior consists of 30,000 square feet. Within this space, there is extraordinary attention to detail in the ceilings, floors, windows, and molding, with nearly every room decorated with beautiful woodwork, antiques, and collections of art.

Today, we have the honor and privilege to tour this remarkable estate. The home was gifted to the public as Eleanor’s wish. The Ford house is filled with rich history and is bested experienced by walking the estate. By visiting, we can connect to our past and learn stories from our ancestors. Such an experience and opportunity should be preserved, as we continue to learn from our past through our nation’s treasures. Let’s continue to support our national historic landmarks and Save MI History!
