First Acquaintances & How Save MI History Came To Be
Hello everyone! Let’s get started!!
My name is Joy and I am a college student studying photography. Although I seem to have found it rather late in my life, photography has become my passion, and I am thankful I found what I love to do!
Along with photography, I love to go on adventures with my husband, Lester. Of course, I bring my camera along with me on every trip. A couple years ago, Lester and I dared to be adventurous and visit a new place we never went to before. We researched places online and came across Edsel & Eleanor Ford House. I never knew this place existed in Michigan and I have lived here my entire life!!
Since neither one of us had heard of or visited the Ford House, we had to go. Obviously, Lester and I thought it was necessary to take the guided house tour. Noticing the exterior of the home as we drove up was just breathtaking. Upon exiting the bus, the staff kindly notified the guests that no photography inside the house was allowed. I was bummed, but I understood their reasons. After they took our tickets, I slowly walked through the entrance to absorb every detail of the home. The grandness of the interior was so beautiful, and the detail so intricate that my eyes started to water, and I am not a crier: at least when it comes to things like that. I fell in love and this is when my interest for historic places ignited.
Ever since that moment, Lester and I have been seeking out other Michigan National Landmarks such as Fair Lane-Home of Clara & Henry Ford, Cranbrook House & Gardens, Meadow Brook Hall, and of course, what I nickname “the happiest place on earth,” The Henry Ford- Greenfield Village. Each location is rich in Michigan’s history, telling their individual stories. As a Michigander, it’s important to know how these places played a major role in shaping who we are today. It’s even better when we are able to experience the history right before our eyes, which is the reason why I created the Save MI History project.
In this project, my objective is to advocate for the awareness of Michigan’s National Historic Landmarks and the necessity for their preservation. By photographing these landmarks and featuring them weekly, I hope to encourage Michiganders to go out and visit these remarkable places as well as to voice the importance of Michigan’s National Historic Landmarks through signing an online petition that will later be submitted to Michigan’s legislatures.
The National Historic Landmarks throughout Michigan are physical representations of Michigan’s rich history; a history that can only be truly appreciated through seeing it with your own eyes, and one that deserves to be preserved for future generations to see.
There is no better time to advocate for the preservation of Michigan’s National Historic Landmarks than now. Now is the time for us to speak on its behalf. Join the conversation to Save MI History!!
